On the second day of our journey, we left Club Denovo at 9:30 a.m. Leaving earlier would have been ideal, but things don’t always go according to plan. Our destination for the day was Lucknow, 350 km away. However, the day was anything but smooth sailing.
A melting pot of chaos and confusion, the Sunauli border crossing is a different beast altogether. Upon reaching the border, an Indian Army personnel crassly instructed us to pull our car to the side. A series of abrupt commands followed as we unpacked our belongings, collected our identification cards, and presented them at the checkpoint. What followed was a blur of fumbling attempts to complete the border-crossing process, but we eventually made it through.
On the other side, we were immediately met with a barrage of honking horns and chaos. A driver in the wrong lane shouted at us as he sped toward us, adding to the pandemonium. Thankfully, things started to improve as we drove further. The roads began to smooth out, and we quickly stopped to indulge in some delicious roadside pakodas. The BYD M6 began to shine as the journey progressed, hauling all seven passengers comfortably.
While the M6 does feel slightly lofty when tackling tight turns at higher speeds, it comes into its own on the straights. The instant speed generated by the electric motor is remarkable for an MPV, but the power delivery is smooth and linear. This meant that passengers weren’t jerked around, avoiding the nausea-inducing experience that can often accompany EVs. We had to stop to charge along the way, which took a total of 40 minutes—20 minutes each for the M6 and our backup vehicle since there was only one charging port available.
While we waited, we grabbed a meal at a local dhaba. Though the quality left much to be desired, a meal is a meal. We made a beeline for Lucknow with renewed energy and hopes for a better dinner.
As darkness fell, the smooth tarmacs ensured that driving remained largely unhampered. We finally reached Lucknow at 10:30 p.m. and headed straight to a local eatery, Tunday Kebabi. We parked and gorged on delicious Galawati Mutton Kebab and Mutton Biryani—a sweet and satisfying redemption after the day's challenges. From there, we drove to the Hilton Garden Inn to rest and recuperate for Day 3 of our journey: Lucknow to Delhi.
